A man was detained by the U.S. Secret Service on Tuesday morning after attempting to scale the wall at President Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
The man reportedly told law enforcement that he wanted to marry the president’s teenage granddaughter, Kai, and “spread the gospel.”
Anthony Thomas Reyes, 23, was arrested by the Palm Beach Police Department early Tuesday morning after attempting to unlawfully enter the president’s property, according to booking records from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office show.
Reyes was initially charged with trespassing offenses and given a $1,000 bond, though it was later raised to $50,000, records show. Federal charges could soon be forthcoming.
President Trump was in Washington D.C. at the time of the incident, law enforcement officials said.
“An adult male was arrested early Tuesday morning by the Palm Beach Police Department for unlawfully entering the Mar-a-Lago Club property in Florida. Shortly after midnight, the individual scaled a perimeter fence and triggered alarms,” the U.S. Secret Service told Fox News.
“U.S. Secret Service personnel detained him without incident at the scene. Palm Beach Police officers responded to the scene and took the individual into custody, charging him with occupied trespassing.”
During his initial court appearance on Tuesday, June 3, Reyes entered a plea of not guilty before Judge Daliah Weiss. The judge ordered him to have no contact with President Trump or Kai Trump or any of their family members, court records reviewed by the Palm Beach Daily News show.
He was also ordered to not have any contact with any of Trump’s properties or any witnesses of the incident, and was prohibited from possessing any weapons or firearms.
Reyes is being represented by the Palm Beach County Public Defender’s Office, which does not comment on active cases as a matter of policy.
Tuesday’s incident was not the first time Reyes had attempted to gain entry to Mar-A-Lago. According to the arrest report, Palm Beach Police issued Reyes a warning for trespassing at the estate this past New Year’s Eve.
Trump was staying at the property at the time of that incident, the president’s public schedule shows.
Reyes is the latest person to be arrested for attempting to gain entry to Mar-A-Lago following the attempt on then-candidate Trump’s life at his nearby West Palm Beach golf course last August.
On April 12, Adrienne Tajirian of Pennsylvania was arrested after attempting to enter the property in order to “have dinner” with Donald Trump Jr. She pleaded guilty in May and was sentenced to serve six months of probation, court records show.
